Ranger Designer Challenge Canvas Art

Hi everyone!! I think I might get the worst blogger award… jeeeeez I'm bad!!

As some of you may know, I was recently at CHA (Craft Hobby Association trade show) out in Anaheim CA… a lovely time to go as we were having such cold temps here at home.

Before the trade show, Tim Holtz invited me to be part of the Ranger Designer Challenge where we were to use Dina Wakley paints.

We were given a canvas board, stencil, stamps, some tags, texture paste, paints and a few other goodies... then set free to do what we do.

Sooo I painted!!!  This is not my usual style, but I enjoyed it all the same.

I started out with the stencil and paste, then added the large tags. From there I added more texture paste, randomly using a pallet knife. I let the knife skit over the canvas to add interesting texture and bumps.

I blocked out my color, drew the heart and went to town painting. I let the paint dry between major color areas so I didn't spread.

TIP: I used a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol to wipe away some of the paint for a distressed look. Alcohol breaks down the pigment and is also great for clean up or removing mistakes.

Once I was happy with the painting, I defined edges of the tags and heart with brown and black Big Brush markers. Once everything was dry, I added my embellishments. I used a good strong glue for those Helmar 450 Quick Dry. It's a little stinky, but the best.

The final touch was using a black pen to add more depth and also watered down black gesso for spatter.

I've listed all the supplies below except the canvas board. I'd love to know that I've given you inspiration enough for you to try your hand at a canvas.

Enjoy!

I'm thinking that I need to see you doing a canvas on video & THEN I might get brave enough to try it! I want to do one so badly but have never painted in my life. Something like this MIGHT be possible but I need to watch you do it. I know your busy but hopefully, someday you can! Thanks, Shari!
